My extended warrenty (three years) had only 2 weeks to run so I finally took my laptop to the computer doctor to get the faulty sound repaired. It arrived back yesterday after almost four weeks: new hard drive, new mother board, data gone to data heaven.

ohmygod. You would have done backups - but then I don't do it myself. A new life??
Yes, I got myself a back up contraption as I ratehr thought my data might all disappear. They gave me the hard drive back in a little plastic bag.
